Russel Wright: Living with Good Design explores the world of one of America’s most influential
designers. Before modern day designers and decorators were part of the mainstream, Russel Wright’s table ware,
serving pieces and furniture were found in homes across the U.S. Living with Good Design will trace the development
of Wright’s career as the creator of a new American way of living in the mid 20th century.
Wright was born and reared in Lebanon, Ohio, and conducted most of his career in New York City. With his
wife Mary’s acute sense of marketing, Wright became known to millions of American homemakers in the 1940s
and ‘50s. Beyond product design, Wright led Americans toward a more casual style of life following World War
II, encouraging a new generation to live more efficiently and comfortably. The clean lines of his designs and
his egalitarian philosophy are echoed in his firm belief that "good design is for everyone."
"Russel Wright: Living with Good Design" is organized by Arts Midwest and the Decorative Arts Center of Ohio. The national tour, sponsored by Target, will visit six galleries throughout the United States and represents the first time that Russel Wright's designs have been exhibited outside of New York State. |
